BETWEEN THE NOTES OF LIFE
My name is Manolito Steinbach. I am a musician and represent the second and third generation of the victims of Auschwitz. I was born in 1971 in Berlin-Wedding. I grew up and went to school there. Very early on, I personally experienced what racism and antigypsyism mean. Because I was teased and bullied by my classmates because I am a member of the Sinti.

I grew up with my grandmother and had to learn from her early on what happened to us Sinti during the Second World War under National Socialism. It is very important to me to tell others about it. Because what happened back then could happen again. Racism and antigypsyism are still in many people’s minds. It is important that people talk openly about these topics in order to create awareness and fight discrimination. I do this, for example, in my “readings with music”, e.g. with the Sinti Jazz Connection, and as 1st chairman of the association Maro Tchatchepen e.V.

Afterwards, the renowned antigypsyism expert Verena Meier-Zekić will talk about the role of the Magdeburg criminal police in the Nazi genocide of Sinti and Roma. Based on previously unexplored files, she shows the scope of action used by local perpetrators and the persecuted, the role played by the social category of gender, and how different social actors supported and collaborated with the apparatus of violence. This year, the historian with a doctorate was awarded the Dan David Prize, one of the world’s most important history prizes, for her research, the world’s largest history prize, which honors outstanding scientific achievements that open up new perspectives on the past and contribute to a deeper understanding of history in the public debate.
